After the controversy that shock up the state capital last week, Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry signed a proclamation naming the Flaming Lips’ song “Do you Realize??” the official rock and roll song for the state.

Controversy began as one of the of the native Oklahoma City psychedelic/experimental/rockers showed up to the state Capitol wearing a shirt that depicted a hammer and sickle symbol associated with communism.

This story made huge headlines not only in Oklahoma, but around the world.

On Friday, April 24 the story made the front cover of “The Oklhoman”, the state’s newspaper with highest circulation, while a story about how senate failed to override  a bill signed by Henry lifting a ban on stem cell research occupied a way (way) smaller portion of the front page.

It seems odd that people these days are more concerned about what rock song will be forever associated with their home state than stem cell research.
