Pop-culture reference eases flight
Family Guy's Glen Quagmire.
Pop-culture is a vital part of American life. In a weird way, it makes our twisted, difficult, and stressful lives much more easier to deal with.
Pop-culture’s infinite grace provides society with the necessary “push” and comic relief that allow us to get by.
Today this proved to be the case, as I prepared to do something I had never done in my life.
As part of our training to create my university’s next yearbook, three of my fellow Student Publications editors, and I were invited to attend a tour of the Herff Jones yearbook manufacturing plant, in Kansas City, Kans.
Getting to this location required us to take a one hour flight, but there were a few small problems. I am terrified of speed, and heights. Most importantly, I had never flown, not once in my entire 19 years on Planet Earth. I was petrified.
As I boarded the plane I kept thinking of what could go wrong. As time to depart came closer I increasingly became more and more paranoid of killer engine-loving geese flocks popping out of nowhere.
As the flight was getting ready to depart to our destination, the voice of the aircraft’s pilot blared through the audio system as he proceeded togreet the passengers, ”Good morning, I’m the pilot of the plane (insert name here). We are heading to Kansas City, this flight will take approximately one hour,” he said.
What he would say next caught me off guard, “The whether is good, with the exception of strong headwinds from the East. (Slight pause) Giggity!”, he uttered.
I could not believe what I had just heard, an obscure Family Guy reference!
Being an avid Family Guy enthusiast, I never thought a line from the show would ever bring me a sense of piece in a real life serious situation.
After the pilot’s momentary Quagmire moment I was slowly able to regroup my thoughts and come up with nice fluffy thoughts to calm me down, like puppies, bunnies, cupcakes, and things of that nature.
After the pilot of the aircraft attacked my nervousness with those few simple pop-culture words, I knew it was all going to be, giggity giggity alright!
