It’s all about Tyra baby!

President Obama (then senator) on the Tyra Banks Show during his campaign trail.
During the past several weeks Joel McHale host of E!’s “The Soup” has brought to my attention a very funny fact about former super model, and now daytime television favorite, Tyra Banks. According to McHale, no matter what the topic, no matter the situation, it is always about the lovely Ms. Banks. Let me explain.
As a talk-show host it is only natural to try to relate to the audience. But there is a limit.
Banks seems to always have a personal anecdote, or know someone who has gone through a similar experience. Again, it is understandable, that’s part of her job. But seriously, always?
Please don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t believe her, or doubt her honesty. I just think the way she sometimes presents things makes her sound a bit conceited. It sometimes even seems as if she enjoys being in the spotlight. After all she is a former model.
Two examples that stand out in my mind have now become infamous inside jokes for people like myself that religiously watch McHale’s show.
When Miley Cyrus celebrated her 16th birthday, Banks was asked what her gift for the teen idol’s sweet sixteen was. Banks told the reporter she presented Cyrus with a picture of herself, when she was sixteen.
C’mon, really? Can you sound anymore conceited? Nah, I don’t think so.
Exhibit B.
President Obama visited Banks’s show during his campaign trail. During a segment of the show, Banks asked the then senator to predict his future while looking into a crystal ball. Obama replied, “I see the White House,” and as we all know his prediction was correct.
Fast forward more than a year later. The morning after Obama’s historic win, Banks uploaded a video on her website with her reaction. Nothing wrong with that.
By the end of the video it all starts becoming about her. Forget Obama, it’s all about Banks!
“The fact that he looked into that crystal ball that I had in my hands and, he said that, and he said it to me,” she said.
From that moment on the words I, me, and my can be heard about 20 times in the remainder of the clip, which is less than a minute.
I was wrong, you can sound more self centered than before.
My only suggestion for Banks is to tone it down a little. It can’t always be about you. On second thought, I guess when you become your own boss, and you run the show it can.
