Jimmy’s first week

Jimmy Fallon the new host of "Late Night" on NBC.

As I have mentioned in earlier posts I am a huge fan of anything related to Saturday Night Live.

When I found out that SNL alum Jimmy Fallon would replace Conan O’Brien  as the host of “Late Night” I was pleasantly surprised. I found the choice to be interesting.

The Fallon era began March 2,  receiving mixed reviews. 

Fallon earned the network the best ratings in the show’s timeslot for three years, leading rival CBS’s Craig Ferguson by 35 percent.

Despite many of the negative comments about the show’s first week run, I enjoyed the episodes aired so far.

Although Fallon was a bit shaky and nervous on the first night the material was funny.

The “Slow-jamming the news” and “Lick it for 10″ segments were different in a quirky way. 

Another positive aspect of the show so far is the use of audience participation. Segments like “Lick it for 10,” the “President of the audience,” and the “Facebook status” bits involved crowd interaction which I found very refreshing for the show’s format. The show has also reached to young audiences via Twitter, Facebook and MySpace, a first in the format’s history.

People have to remember that Fallon is new in the late night talk-show business, and that the responsibility on his shoulders is enormous. He “inherited”  one of the most successful nighttime network programs with one of the toughest crowds.

Fallon must remember that he won’t be liked by everyone no matter how hard he tries. Even during his SNL days Fallon had a notorious crowd of nay-sayers, and that is alright. No one can please absolutely everyone, ever.

The “Fallon haters” will be and always have been out there, but that is all part of the deal.

As soon as Fallon loosens up and controls his nervousness he will be fine. His boyish charm and dorky personality will work in his favor. They did on SNL, why shouldn’t they now?

I see potential in Fallon, I always have. There is huge room for improvement, and I know Fallon will not disappoint.
